John W. Campbell’s fierce novelette of alien invasion, possession and death at an isolated polar scientific station appeared first in the March, l938 Astounding Science Fiction. The film version, The Thing From Another World, produced by Howard Hawks, was released in l95l and became perhaps the first of the great science fiction cult films of that decade. It was successfully remade by John Carpenter in l982 as The Thing.
