Far beneath the polar ice-cap the Red Dawn, an ageing diesel-powered submarine, is trapped in ice. The USS Sea Wolf tracks the submarine but discovers that the Soviet sub is carrying a new propulsion system.
The race is soon on because a Russian task force is also trying to rescue the sub.
When an aging Soviet sub becomes caught under the polar ice cap while being escorted by one of the best submarines in the Soviet Navy, a high-tech game of cat and mouse involving the superpowers ensues.
